Blue Dolphin Cichlid (Cyrtocara moorii)
The Blue Dolphin Cichlid, also known as Cyrtocara moorii, is a stunning and peaceful cichlid species admired for its unique appearance and shimmering blue color. Originating from Lake Malawi, this species is characterized by the distinctive nuchal hump on its forehead, which grows more pronounced as the fish matures. Blue Dolphin Cichlids thrive in large aquariums and are best suited for peaceful community setups with other similarly sized cichlids.
Male vs Female Coloration:
Both male and female Blue Dolphins develop a nuchal hump, but males typically grow larger and may display slightly more vivid coloration, especially during spawning. Females remain smaller and may exhibit less vibrant colors but are equally striking with their brilliant blue bodies.
Behavior and Tank Requirements:
Blue Dolphin Cichlids are generally peaceful, though they can show occasional aggression during breeding or if overcrowded. They thrive in larger tanks with plenty of open swimming space. These fish prefer sandy substrates and are comfortable in setups with minimal rock structures. As carnivores, they may prey on smaller tank mates, so it's important to house them with fish of a similar size or temperament.
Compatibility:
This species may also be kept alongside other more peaceable Malawi cichlids such as other Haplochromis species, Labidochromis caeruleus (Yellow Lab), Aulonocara species, and similarly tempered cichlids. Additionally, appropriately sized Synodontis catfish can make good tankmates. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive or significantly smaller fish to prevent predation or stress.
