Lethrinops Red Cap, often referred to as Lethrinops sp. "Red Cap" Itungi, is a captivating African cichlid originating from Lake Malawi. Known for its distinct red cap coloring, this species adds a vibrant touch to any aquarium. Bred in-house from German imported breeders here at Top Shelf Animals, these rare gems are living aquatic art and a bucket list fish for many enthusiasts.
Behavior and Tank Requirements:
Lethrinops Red Cap thrives in a breeding harem setup with multiple males and females (preferably more females). This environment allows them to display their full potential, showcasing striking colors including a bright deep red forehead and long flowing fins. They prefer a tank with ample swimming space and minimal decorations. Provide line-of-sight breaks with rocks and plants to create territories and reduce aggression.
Feeding Habits:
As sand-sifting cichlids, Lethrinops Red Cap feed by filtering sand through their gills to extract microorganisms. Offer them a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or mysis shrimp to maintain optimal health and coloration.
Compatibility:
Due to their peaceful nature within a harem setup, Lethrinops Red Cap can coexist with other docile cichlid species from Lake Malawi, such as other Lethrinops variants, Aulonocara species, and some Haplochromis species. When setting up an all-male tank, mix with other timid and peaceful species like other Lethrinops, Placidochromis, and certain Aulonocara. Including multiple males of the same species is highly recommended to enhance color display and reduce aggression.
