Dimidochromis compressiceps - Eye Bitter
Dimidochromis compressiceps - Eye Bitter
The Eye Bitter (Dimidiochromis compressiceps), commonly known as the Eye Biter, is a striking African cichlid that adds a bold and unique presence to your aquarium. Despite its common name, this species is not particularly prone to targeting the eyes of other fish. It is known as an ambush predator that hunts from above, utilizing its lateral compression to blend into its surroundings and remain unnoticed from below. In its natural habitat along the shorelines of Lake Malawi, the Eye Bitter hides among Vallisneria plants, where it actively hunts smaller fish.
Appearance:
The Eye Bitter features an elongated body with vibrant colors, often displaying shades of blue and yellow. Its large mouth is well-adapted for capturing prey.
Behavior and Feeding:
In home aquariums, the Eye Bitter exhibits its natural hunting behavior, often seen hovering motionless in darker corners of the tank. It waits patiently for prey to swim by, then swiftly lunges forward with its expansive mouth to capture and consume smaller fish. This predatory technique is fascinating to observe but requires caution when selecting tankmates to avoid compatibility issues.
Tank Requirements:
Provide a spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding spots among plants, rocks, or driftwood to mimic its natural habitat. Line-of-sight blocks are essential to reduce aggression, as the Eye Bitter can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks. Ensure water quality is pristine with stable parameters.
Compatibility:
Due to its predatory nature, avoid keeping the Eye Bitter with smaller or more timid tankmates that may become prey. Suitable companions include other robust Predator Hap cichlids from Lake Malawi or larger, more aggressive species that can hold their own.
