Star Sapphire Cichlid (Protomelas phenochilus tanzania)
The Star Sapphire Cichlid, also known as the Phenochilus, is one of the most visually striking species from Lake Malawi. These cichlids are highly prized for their unique "chipping" pattern, a characteristic where individual scales begin to develop light blue or white sparkles, resembling a constellation set against a sapphire-blue body. This transformation typically begins when males reach about 4 inches and continues as they mature, with full development taking several years. Patience is key, as these slow-growing fish can take up to 8 years to fully complete their transformation.
Star Sapphire Cichlids are more sought after due to their rare and stunning appearance, making them a favorite among hobbyists looking for a standout display in their aquariums.
Male vs Female Coloration: Males exhibit the iconic chipping, which becomes more pronounced as they age, while females typically remain a more subdued color with less patterning.
Behavior and Tank Requirements: Star Sapphire Cichlids can be aggressive and should be housed in larger tanks to allow space for their territorial nature. They prefer a setup with plenty of open swimming areas, along with rock formations or other structures to create territories.
Compatibility: Best stocking practices are to avoid aggressive or overly territorial tankmates, as well as similarly-colored fish, which might provoke hostility. It's best to avoid keeping them with Mbuna. Suitable tankmates include other peaceful and less aggressive cichlids such as Lethrinops, Placidochromis, and mild-mannered Aulonocara species.
