Malawi Hawk Cichlid
The Malawi Hawk Cichlid, Aristochromis christyi, is a formidable predator from Lake Malawi, known for its unique beak-like mouth that it uses to prey upon smaller fish. One of the largest cichlids in Lake Malawi, the Malawi Hawk is distinguished by its long, streamlined body and large, pronounced head, adapted for ambushing agile prey in the wild. Males develop an impressive bluish coloration as they mature, with vibrant orange ventral fins. This species is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its specific care requirements and predatory nature.
Behavior and Tank Requirements: Malawi Hawks are solitary in nature and can be kept as a single male specimen or in a harem with multiple females if space allows. Due to their size and activity level, these fish require a large aquarium with plenty of open swimming space, ideally around 125 gallons as a minimum. Strong filtration is essential, as these predators produce considerable waste (as many large predatory species do).
Feeding Habits: A natural piscivore, Aristochromis christyi will adapt to high-quality pellets in captivity but also thrives on occasional offerings of krill, brine shrimp, and similar protein-rich foods. We feed a variety of cichlid and krill pellets with frozen foods a few times a week
Compatibility: This species is best housed with similarly sized Haps and Peacocks, or robust species that appreciate similar water conditions. Avoid smaller tankmates that could fit into the Malawi Hawk's mouth, as they may be seen as prey.
