Placidochromis electra - Deep Water
Placidochromis electra - Deep Water
Placidochromis electra, known as the Deep Water Hap, is a gentle and elegant cichlid originating from Lake Malawi. Despite its name, this species is found at a variety of depths within the lake. It defends territories between rocks in intermediate habitats. Males in breeding dress are frequently seen in open water sand areas.
Behavior and Feeding: Placidochromis electra is an opportunistic feeder that does not dig in the sand; instead, it picks food from its surface. In its natural habitat, it is frequently found among schools of Lethrinops and seems to benefit from the continuous digging activities of these grubbers. It rushes from one "dust-cloud" to the next to feed on microorganisms stirred up by other fish.
Tank Requirements: To accommodate Placidochromis electra, provide a spacious aquarium of at least 100 gallons with ample swimming room and rocky formations to mimic its natural habitat. This species thrives in stable water conditions with moderate lighting and a sandy substrate.
Compatibility: Best stocking practices are to avoid aggressive or overly territorial tankmates, as well as similarly-colored fish, which might provoke hostility. It's best to avoid keeping them with Mbuna. Suitable tankmates for Placidochromis electra include other peaceful and less aggressive cichlids such as Lethrinops, Placidochromis, and mild-mannered Aulonocara species.
In Breeding setups, they coexist peacefully with their own kind but may exhibit mild territorial behavior during breeding. It is recommended to keep several females per male to diffuse aggression.
