Phenochilus Gissel (Placidochromis sp.) Care Guide
The Phenochilus Gissel is a striking cichlid and a rarer cousin of the Star Sapphire. Known for its unique blue-green aquamarine body color, this Haplochromine stands out with its mature coloration and impressive size. Juveniles begin developing their colors around 2 inches, and females retain a remarkable amount of color compared to many African cichlids. This species is suitable for intermediate aquarists due to its specific care requirements.
Male vs Female Coloration:
- Males: Display a stunning blue-green aquamarine coloration with visible stripes that may persist until full maturity.
- Females: Retain a significant amount of color compared to many African cichlids, though typically less vibrant than males.
Behavior and Tank Requirements:
- Temperament: Less aggressive compared to other predatory and peacock cichlids; however, it can still exhibit territorial behavior.
- Territorial Needs: Provide ample line-of-sight breaks, such as rocks or plants, to help create territories and reduce potential aggression. Allow some open water space in the tank, as these fish grow large and need room to swim.
Compatibility:
- Avoid: Highly aggressive tankmates that may provoke conflicts.
- Suitable Tankmates: Malawi Haps, Malawi Peacocks, and Synodontis species.
