Taiwan Reef Cichlid (Protomelas sp. "Steveni Taiwan")
The Taiwan Reef Cichlid is one of the more stunning Haplochromis species from Lake Malawi. Renowned for its striking coloration, this species features a predominantly yellow body with a bright blue head that extends across the back and tail. It also boasts red pelvic and anal fins, with a distinctive white stripe running along the top of its head and the tip of the dorsal fin, adding to its vibrant, multi-colored appearance.
Behavior and Tank Requirements:
This species is relatively peaceful for a Malawi Hap and makes a great addition to a tank with other peaceful Haps and Peacocks. They prefer a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room, along with rocky areas to explore.
Compatibility:
Taiwan Reef Cichlids can be kept alongside other peaceable Malawi cichlids such as other Haplochromis species, Aulonocara (Peacock) species, and more timid mbuna such as Labidochromis caeruleus (yellow lab). They are also compatible with appropriately sized Synodontis catfish. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive tank mates, as this may lead to stress or territorial disputes.
