Red Empress (Protomelas taeniolatus)
The Red Empress is a stunning Haplochromis species known for its brilliant red coloration and manageable size, making it a popular choice for hap and peacock tanks. With its striking appearance and relatively calm temperament, the Red Empress is a must-have for any cichlid enthusiast looking to add vibrant colors to their aquarium.
Male vs Female Coloration:
Males develop vivid red coloration along with blue highlights, which becomes more pronounced as they mature. Females, however, remain more neutral in coloration, usually displaying shades of gray or brown.
Behavior and Tank Requirements:
The Red Empress is less aggressive compared to other Hap species, allowing it to coexist peacefully with most other haps and peacocks in the tank. Dominant males may show territorial behavior, especially during breeding, but this is generally mild. Provide ample swimming space and include rocks or decorations to create territories and hiding spots.
Compatibility:
Red Empress cichlids are well-suited for tanks with other peaceful Haps and Peacocks. Avoid housing them with highly aggressive tankmates, as this can lead to unnecessary stress and aggression.
