Ornatus Thick Lips (Protomelas ornatus)

The Ornatus Thick Lips is a captivating cichlid native to Lake Malawi, characterized by its enlarged, fleshy lips that it uses to hunt small Mbuna and crustaceans in rocky habitats. This species thrives in the transition zone of the lake, where it can be found in relatively shallow waters (1 to 10 meters depth). Males can reach a total length of about 10 inches (25 cm), while females typically grow to about 6.7 inches (17 cm).

Male vs Female Coloration: Males are generally larger and more colorful than females, showcasing vibrant hues that attract potential mates. Females, while still attractive, have more muted colors.

Behavior and Tank Requirements: The Ornatus Thick Lips is a relatively peaceful cichlid but may exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding. Provide ample hiding spots, such as caves and crevices, for females to retreat to if the male becomes overly aggressive. Ensure there is sufficient open swimming space in the middle of the tank.

Compatibility: Ornatus Thick Lips can be housed with other Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament, such as Victorian Haps, Malawi Haps, Malawi Peacocks, and appropriately sized Synodontis catfish. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive species.
